The Kaspersky Cybersecurity Index is based on a twice-yearly online survey of thousands of Internet users around the world, conducted by Kaspersky Lab. The sample in each wave of research represents the adult online population according to age and gender in every country of the study.

In the second half of 2017, we surveyed 21,081 respondents from the following countries:

The Kaspersky Cybersecurity Index

The Kaspersky Cybersecurity Index includes three main indicators that provide a multi-dimensional picture of the level of danger users are currently exposed to online:

Unconcerned – the proportion of people not believing that they could be a target for cybercrime

Unprotected – the number of users who fail to protect themselves from cyberthreats with the help of antivirus or Internet security software across all their desktops, laptops and mobile devices

Affected – the people who have experienced different cybersecurity incidents during the previous months

Additional statistics

Additional statistics, which help us to evaluate the online environment for Internet users, are presented in a variety of graphs, including:

Online Activity

What types of activities people perform when they are online using their personal devices. The list presents a select number of activities, not every activity possible

Cyberthreats faced

The threats that users encountered online during the period. These statistics were revised and updated with two additional types of incidents: "financial fraud" and "device used for cyberattacks", making the figures incomparable year-on-year

Protection Means

How many users have protected their devices with security solutions, and what devices are protected

Device Usage

How many and what type of connected devices people have in their households

Cost of Incidents

How cyberthreats have affected users' wallets: how much money they paid to mitigate malware infection; how much money they lost online during a financial scam; and how big a ransom they paid when affected by ransomware. The figures calculated here are the median average
The global data (referred to as “all countries") excludes findings from China. All indicators on a global level are calculated for trackable countries, included in all waves. Not all statistics are comparable year-on-year.
